CHILDREN AT RISK
Reach for Success!

Katy ARTreach Mentoring through Art Program
Katy ARTreach serves children at risk through the Katy I.S.D. KEYS Mentoring Program (Keep Encouraging Youth towards Success) KEYS Mentors are adults who share their wisdom, skills and big hearts with at-risk students to Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success. Through an annual commitment of one hour per week, mentors serve as advocates, counselors and tutors, motivating students to reach their fullest potential.

At-risk students are in all grade levels. They may have life circumstances beyond their control that have yielded low grades, excessive discipline referrals, or abundant absences. While some students need academic assistance, others just need help acquiring social skills.

Since things may not come easily for these children, KEYS mentors patiently and steadfastly build one-on-one relationships with their charges. As a result, amazing things happen. A quick glimpse at the big picture success for 2000-01 reveals an enduring legacy:

  • 78% of mentored students decreased discipline referrals
  • 69% of mentored students decreased absences
  • 57% of mentored students improved grades
